Wines from Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is the beating heart of South African wine — a spectacularly beautiful region of granite mountains and oak-lined towns just 50 kilometers from Cape Town. It produces the country's most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends, alongside the uniquely South African Pinotage and some of the world's best-value Chenin Blanc. Three centuries of winemaking history meet a modern generation of ambitious producers, making Stellenbosch one of the most exciting regions to explore anywhere.

Stellenbosch enjoys a Mediterranean climate moderated by cooling breezes from False Bay, with warm dry summers and wet winters. Its patchwork of granite and sandstone soils across mountain slopes — Simonsberg, Helderberg, the Bottelary hills — creates a mosaic of sites, from powerful sun-drenched reds on the warmer slopes to fresher, mineral whites nearer the ocean.
Wine History
Governor Simon van der Stel founded Stellenbosch in 1679, and vines followed almost immediately, making it one of the oldest wine regions of the New World. Huguenot refugees brought French expertise in the 1680s. The region gave the world Pinotage in 1925, when Professor Abraham Perold crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsault. After the end of apartheid-era isolation in the 1990s, Stellenbosch re-entered the world stage and has since earned a place among the great Cabernet regions.
Key Grapes
| Grape | Role | Style |
|---|---|---|
| Cabernet Sauvignon | The flagship red and backbone of Stellenbosch's finest blends | Powerful yet polished, with blackcurrant, cedar, graphite and fine dusty tannins |
| Pinotage | South Africa's signature grape, born in Stellenbosch | Bold dark fruit with smoky, earthy notes — modern examples are juicy and refined |
| Chenin Blanc | The most planted white, from old bush vines to barrel-aged icons | From crisp apple-and-citrus freshness to rich, honeyed, age-worthy whites |
| Syrah | Rising star on granite soils | Peppery, savory and perfumed, closer to the Rhône than to Australia |
| Chardonnay | Elegant whites from cooler mountain sites | Citrus and stone fruit with balanced oak and fresh acidity |

Food & Wine Culture
Stellenbosch wines were made for the braai — South Africa's beloved barbecue culture. Cabernet and Pinotage stand up beautifully to grilled boerewors, lamb chops and smoky meat, while Chenin Blanc is the classic partner for Cape Malay curries, seafood from the nearby coast and the region's goat cheeses. The town itself has become one of the southern hemisphere's great food destinations, with tasting menus built around estate wines.
